Week 7 Story: The Panthers
Once upon a time there was a mother panther who had three lovely cubs. She left them at home one day and told them to be good for she had to go gather food for them.
As the mother wandered through the forest she ran into a human carrying a large knife and carting some meat that had just been butchered. She was very busy and tried not to chat with the human, but he would not let her pass.
"Hello panther, lovely day isn't it? Could I interest you in some fresh beef I've just acquired?" The human spoke loudly and looked friendly enough, but the panther did not trust him.
"No thank you sir, I have to return to my cubs soon," but as she tried to walk past him, he stabbed her with his knife and killed her. This man was sneaky, and knew that she had cubs somewhere, so he dressed himself up in the panther's fur pelt like a coat and started walking.
Night time came, and he walked along the path the panther had earlier that day until he heard some cubs crying for their mother from inside a small cave. There seemed to be no entrance but there was a large crack that the man could see into.
The man peered through the crack and said, "Hello cubs, come outside and eat, it's your mother with your dinner!"
The cubs stopped crying to inspect the voice. They said, "You don't sound like our mother."
To which the man replied, "I'm getting a slight cold so my voice sounds deeper, don't worry about me just come out!"
Although it was dark outside, the cubs could clearly see that this was a human in their mother's fur. Their first instinct was to cry out, but they knew they had to get the man to leave or they'd be dead soon too.
There was a very small hole at the back of the cave, that the cubs could enter and exit through, but not large enough that the man could see it. They told him, "We will be out in just a second mother, let us clean up first!"
The man grew cold and angry waiting outside that night, so he built a fire outside the cave and sharpened his knife until the cubs came out. The cubs quietly snuck out of the cave in the tiny hole, and hid behind a bush so the man couldn't see them.
They sneakily climbed up the tree directly above the man, and then all at once, they jumped down.
The first cub landed on his head and clawed out the mans eyes so he could not see. The now blinded man stumbled around screaming at the cubs. "YOU'LL NEVER ESCAPE ME," he howled.
The second cub ripped her mother's fur coat off of the man, so now he was naked and cold. The third cub stood in front of the man, so that he while he stumbled around, he tripped over the cub and fell into the fire, killing him slowly.
The cubs gathered the beef that the man had, roasted it over the fire, and lived happily ever after.

AUTHOR'S NOTE: This original story was very much like Little Red Riding Hood, but I really wanted to mix it up a little and instead made the human the villain and the panthers the good guys. The overall theme of this story wasn't about humans versus animals, but more about the values of family so I really don't think it matters what species everyone is.

Hello Hayley, I thought your story was really great! I really liked how you switched the rolls and had the panther the good guy and the human be the bad guy, it was a cool twist on the original. The ending was unexpected though when the man died. Overall I thought the story was absolutely great, keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteHey Hayley! I immediately thought of the wolf in sheep's clothing when the man wore the mother panther's pelt, and I can see Little Red Riding Hood in it as well after you mentioned that story. It was a welcome sight to see the cubs avenge their mother and not let the man prevail. It's sad that the man was willing to do that to her though. I really liked the story and the values behind it, keep it up!
