Week 9 Story : Lightning and Thunder

BOOM

A flash lit up Ellie's bedroom before the thunder echoed throughout the night. Instead of crying like many toddlers would at this sound; Ellie was excited because it was story time. Her mother walked into the room holding The Pretty Pony, the usual book of choice, but something was different tonight.

"Can you tell me a different story tonight, not Pretty Pony?" Ellie asked. She carefully tucked her stuffed animals into bed next to her. They were just as ready for a story as she was.

"Sure," her mother said, picking up a few other story books off of the floor to inspect.

"No! Can you tell me one of YOUR stories, please Mommy? Not from a book. A new story I've never heard before. You make up the BEST stories," Ellie begged, with her saddest pouty face. She loved her mother's stories.

BOOM

Another crash came from the storm outside. Ellie snuggled tight in her bed, eyes wide open, eagerly awaiting the perfect story. Her mother knew exactly the tale to tell.

"Do you know why the lightning and the thunder stay in the clouds?"

A long time ago, Thunder and Lightning lived in a village on earth. Thunder was an old mother sheep and Lightning was her ram son. Whenever the ram son got angry, he would burn down forests, knock down houses, stomp on crops, and even bump into villagers.

After Lightning threw one of his fits, his mother, Thunder, would yell at him for being so bad. Her voice echoed throughout the entire town, yet Lightning would not listen to her and continued to cause more damage.

The king of this town was sick of the two sheep taking over his kingdom, and banished them to the skies so they could no longer damage earth.

~~~
"They may be in the clouds, but they still make a lot of noise!" Ellie giggled. Her mother gave her a kiss on the forehead, tucked her in tight, then left the room.
BOOM
Ellie smiled in her bed, slowly drifting off to sleep while dreaming about the sheep in the clouds.
Authors Note: This is based off of a Nigerian folktale I read, and I didn't change much from the original. I really liked how simple of a story it was, and that it could be easily explained. I thought it would be perfect for a children's bedtime story. It's a really fun visual to have a mother sheep yelling at her son for destroying things, and I just overall loved the story.
  1. Hi Hayley, I really enjoyed reading your story! I love the mother-daughter aspect of this story. This is a very practical and realistic story. I also like how you incorporate the sheep and ram into the story. I can definitely picture this as a true story; making it very relatable and personal to the reader. Your story flows very smoothly and is easy to follow. Great job!
  2. Hi Hayley!
    I also did a bedtime story as one of my posts so it was really cool to see you do the same thing! Your story, much like the original, was short and sweet! I like that you wrote the little girl to not be afraid of the thunder and lightning, it was never something that scared me, but instead always fascinated me. I would have loved to hear this story when I was a little kid! I can't wait to read more of your stories!
  3. I read the Nigerian Folktales too! This is such a cute adaptation of this story and you summarized it perfectly. The use of tildes to separate the sections was a really nice touch too. They just look so adorable! The picture of the sheep is pretty cool too and I like how you chose to make it smaller and set it in line with the text. Great job!
