1. Goddesses
I have always been a fan of greek mythology, especially after reading the Percy Jackson series as a kid. The gods and goddesses are powerful, immortal, and just overall very cool. I really would love to write about them my storybook, because these are the stories I liked to hear growing up. I'd love to learn more about Norse gods as well and deities from other regions of the world. They don't have to be Greek, but I just know more about Greek mythology than other cultures, but the topic is a bit basic and I would like to be more adventurous and choose something new for me.

2. Mermaids/Sirens
Every little girl has a dream about being a mermaid at some point. There is something so fun about being able to live underwater and also mingle with human life. I don't necessarily want to stick solely with mermaids, but the whole genre of underwater women like Sirens and some of the other, darker myths too. I want to read more than just The Little Mermaid, and see various interpretations of mermaids.

3. Shakespeare
I'm a huge theatre girl and I personally love Shakespeare's plays. I was in a few in high school, and even though some people find them difficult to understand, I think they're really good and even the tragedies have really clever wordplay and funny moments. I really would like to read one of the plays that I didn't know in high school like Comedy of Errors, and retell a funny story in a way that people understand and enjoy.  I wish everyone could see that Shakespeare is anything but boring.

4. Cats
I used to be a dog person, until I realized that I have a lot more in common with cats than I originally thought. Cats get a bad reputation but they're pretty cool and I'd like to read more about the legends surrounding them. Lions are my favorite, and I'm also a big fan of astrology so I think it would be interesting to do more research on Leo the constellation and the stories behind him and other greek mythological animals.

Reading Notes: British North America Part A

This week I decided to focus on names. The names of people, places, and the worlds in these stories are all unique. I find it very interesting that the majority of these have absolutely zero named characters, or the names are just Bear or Raven. I think it says a lot about the culture of these stories and how whenever they are being passed down the names aren’t important, but the messages are. It allows the storyteller to focus on the most important parts and not minor details. Beliefs - Bella Coola Bella Coola is a cool name, pun intended, and it was hard for me to find an actual definition. It mainly means people who live by the Bella Coola River, and can refer to the Nuxalk people. “Afraid of Nothing” is a the name of a goddess who created the world and lives in one of the upper heavens. My last name, Bezdek, is Czech so I thought it would be interesting to read stories that were possibly told to my ancestors growing up in Europe. Since most of these stories are unfamiliar to me, I'm going to jot down notes on general plot and storyline Bibliography: Czech Folktales, Source Sleepy John He fell asleep a lot, I guess narcolepsy is what we'd say today Fell asleep in a cart, and men left him in the forest.
