Week 8 Progress

Looking Back: I am fairly happy with the progress I've made so far in this class. I'm most proud of my storybook idea and the website I've made. I always loved mythology and now I get to write my own stories and it's just really fun and cool. The class assignments I like the most vary from week to week. Some weeks the readings are really interesting and I like the fairy tales more than other weeks. Other times I like writing my own stories.

Looking Forward: In the second half of the semester, I'm going to try and procrastinate less and start things earlier. I really need to take advantage of the extra credit and working ahead, because my class load is intense for my major right now and it would be nice to finish this class early.

This one is really useful because as writers we already have the big picture of where our story is going in our minds, but we forget that it takes small steps to get there. Reading Notes: British North America Part A

This week I decided to focus on names. The names of people, places, and the worlds in these stories are all unique. I find it very interesting that the majority of these have absolutely zero named characters, or the names are just Bear or Raven. I think it says a lot about the culture of these stories and how whenever they are being passed down the names aren’t important, but the messages are. It allows the storyteller to focus on the most important parts and not minor details. Beliefs - Bella Coola Bella Coola is a cool name, pun intended, and it was hard for me to find an actual definition. It mainly means people who live by the Bella Coola River, and can refer to the Nuxalk people. “Afraid of Nothing” is a the name of a goddess who created the world and lives in one of the upper heavens. Creation of the World Wyandot Big Turtle and Old Toad are the names of the characters in this story. There are not a lot of named characters in these stories, rather general term...

My last name, Bezdek, is Czech so I thought it would be interesting to read stories that were possibly told to my ancestors growing up in Europe. Since most of these stories are unfamiliar to me, I'm going to jot down notes on general plot and storyline Bibliography: Czech Folktales, Source Sleepy John He fell asleep a lot, I guess narcolepsy is what we'd say today Fell asleep in a cart, and men left him in the forest.
